365 Main
San Francisco Wins Award for Best Seismic Retrofit
365 Main was awarded with Best Seismic Retrofit and is one
of the most state-of-the-art facilities in the United States
today. The retrofit design began in February 2000, construction
began in July, commissioning of the building support systems
began in December, and the first clients moved-in during
March 2001. An additional 35,000 sq ft of mechanical/penthouse
support spaces were added atop the roof of the existing
building to equip San Francisco for a 1,000 year earthquake.
365 Main San Francisco built to Essential Facility
Status
After 365 Main San Francisco was completely renovated in
2001, the building was built to “essential facility”
status according to applicable building codes. Essential
status is only granted to key buildings which have proven
significant structural integrity to survive an MCE (Maximum
Capable Earthquake) disaster. With its Essential status,
tenants of 365 Main are guaranteed ongoing operations throughout
— and in the aftermath of — a major earthquake.
Inspection is NOT required for continued occupancy.
Award from Department of Mines and Geology
365 Main’s San Francisco facility features a friction
pendulum bearing base isolation system designed to keep
building occupants and critical electrical and mechanical
systems resilient to violent ground motions that can accompany
an earthquake,” said Tony Shakal, Program Manager
of the California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program.
“We chose 365 Main for the State’s seismic monitoring
program because this facility has taken such important measures
to protect it against great earthquakes."
The state chose 365 Main and spent $80,000 installing motion
sensors throughout our building, both above and below the
isolation plane. The direct link to Sacramento monitors
"real time" the movement of our facility. They
chose 365 because of the robust structure including base
isolators to record how the building performs with the isolators
deployed.
365 Main San Francisco Pre-Certified
for Disaster Recovery
A special feature of 365 Main’s San Francisco data
center is the Building Occupancy Resumption Program (BORP),
an award-winning program of the San Francisco Department
of Building Inspection, developed in cooperation with the
Structural Engineers Association of Northern California
(SEAONC), Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA),
and (American Institute of Architects) AIA. BORP allows
building owners to pre-certify private post-earthquake inspection
of their buildings by qualified licensed engineers upon
acceptance of a written inspection program, and allows BORP-certified
facilities the opportunity to engage in speedier recovery
from disasters.
After a major earthquake involving damage to San Francisco
buildings, it is important that local buildings can be inspected
and reoccupied and that business can resume operations as
soon as it is safely possible. The Department of Building
Inspection (DBI) and volunteer inspectors will be utilizing
standard emergency inspection and posting procedures with
priorities geared toward public safety rather than expeditious
business resumption. Some building owners may wish to develop
programs of private inspection for their buildings to permit
rapid, individualized emergency response.
