SAN FRANCISCO
DATA CENTER STANDS FIRM AS THE MOST DISASTER-PROOF DATA FACILITY
IN THE WEST
365 Main’s superior
seismic safety resume provides
unbeatable protection to data-driven business across the globe
SAN FRANCISCO, CA., January
7, 2004 – 365
Main – California’s leading experts
in seismic safety today announced they were chosen as one
of the Bay Area’s Safest Data Centers to participate
in an exclusive state-wide seismic monitoring program. This
is just the latest example of how the San Francisco data center’s
rock-solid infrastructure is setting the industry pace for
safety.
365 Main – with its state-of-the-art
base isolation system, unprecedented marks in seismic integrity,
and its superior structural classifications – was the
only data center chosen by California Department of Mines
and Geology for their study of seismic integrity. The Department
is running a building performance study called the California
Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (CSMIP) – and
the research collected on 365 Main will be used to update
building code and structural system standards for the entire
state.
“365 Main’s friction
pendulum bearing base isolation system is designed to keep
building occupants and critical electrical and mechanical
systems resilient to violent ground motions that can accompany
an earthquake,” said Tony Shakal, Program Manager of
the California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program. “We
chose 365 Main for the State’s seismic monitoring program
because this facility has taken such important measures to
protect it against great earthquakes.”
365 Main has met and surpassed
the highest possible building standards set by the Uniform
Building Code (UBC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA). 365 Main is built to such a high safety standard that
it is the only data center pre-qualified for an expedited
disaster recovery process by the City and County of San Francisco’s
Building Occupancy Resumption Program.
“The safety
specifications to which our facility has been built is comparable
to the elevated structural requirements of a nuclear power
plant, a 911 call center, or a hospital,” said Jean-Paul
Balajadia, Vice President of 365 Main. “Customers deployed
in 365 Main were functioning at 100% during the recent power
outages in San Francisco. Our data center was designed to
maintain ‘business as usual’ even during the worst-case
scenario. 365 Main is proud to have been chosen by the State
of California as a model for testing the seismic safety of
buildings throughout our state.”

Program (BORP) is an award-winning program of the San Francisco
Department of Building Inspection, developed in cooperation
with SEAONC, BOMA, and AIA. BORP allows building owners to
pre-certify private post-earthquake inspection of their buildings
by qualified licensed engineers upon acceptance of a written
inspection program, and allows BORP-certified facilities the
opportunity to engage in speedier recovery from disasters.
